As most of you know, I wrote my Nanowrimo book, THE DEACON working title, on this blog and the one at my website www.dougball.com. It was great fun and I was blessed with many choice and wonderful ideas for corrections and plot. One suggestion even led me to the twist at the end. In thanks to all of you and any others that would like to see some of my work, if you sign up for my monthly newsletter I will send you, absolutely free, one of my short stories, THE BURT BOBB INQUEST.

The story will go out in that newsletter on Friday, 5 February 2016.

In other news,

  1. I have not yet conquered website design using WordPress, but I am able to do much that I wanted to do to make for a better site.
  2. Two new books will be posted in the next few days.
  3. DEACON will get a release date in the next couple of weeks.
  4. DEATH BY BASEBALL is in its final stages. My co-author will be proofing my writing in a few weeks after the Alpha readers get through with it.
  5. If you would like to be a beta reader for any of my books, let me know.
  6. I am also looking for one more Alpha reader that likes to read westerns and/or adventure books.

As always, keep writing. Be Blessed.

TRIUMPH

Today, a major WIN. I have actually gotten into my website and made a beginning on updating it. Take a look and let me know what you think. http://www.dougball.com.

Are you struggling to finish a work in progress? Does the ending baffle the living daylights out of you? Yup, me, too.

The only way to finish is butt in chair and work those fingers for the time it takes to add one word, then two, and away we go. Maybe time is the problem. A small device with keyboard or voice-to-text or a backpack full of laptop going with you everywhere could be the answer. Every time you get stuck in traffic, a service line, a doctor’s office waiting room, at the curb waiting for the kids, sitting in a chair while you child does their dance class, and on and on. You get the idea. WRITE, don’t just vegetate.

FOUR WAYS TO FINISH YOU WORK IN PROGRESS.

  1. Follow the above. Butt in seat and write.
  2. Challenge yourself each morning, in writing, to add a certain number of words.
  3. Read a favorite author for ten minutes before you try to write, tell yourself, “I can do as well as he/she does,” and do it.
  4. Bribe yourself. “I will get 500 words down and then I will get a Coke, or Chocolate, or a ten minute walk with the dog, whatever floats your boat as a favorite reward

Whatever you do, go write or write as you go. I would love to get my wife writing. She could write while I drive and it would distract her from the right seat driving she does.

Be Blessed.

BLUE RIBBON POETRY

A word to the wise

One would surmise

Would be sufficient

It isn’t.

I wrote this for a county fair in Apache County, Arizona. Won a blue ribbon. It was the first year I was not the judge for the creative writing ribbons.

It is something in my life that is a simple statement of what I have found to be true. Most folks just don’t take good advice. They don’t even listen to it. I remember walking up to the display after the judging to see what ribbons went to each piece entered. My joy leaped as I saw the blue ribbon on my four lines in the middle of one piece of paper. It was dashed somewhat when I heard a man say to his wife, “That’s the dumbest poetry I have ever read.” My heart leaped when the wife rebutted, “It’s you to a tee, my dear.”

Be blessed and write.

A New Year, So What????

The new year is just around the corner. I will figuratively throw out the old calendar and hang the new. I have never seen much sense in the hullabaloo over the new year coming around again. Nowadays its even more ridiculous. I will not be throwing out my calendar because I can’t afford a new phone. Me and Google got the calendar all set up years ago and it just keeps going on. Just like the gift of Christmas.

There is no sense in spending many hours reflecting on the past when it is gone, over, done with. We must set out minds on our goals for tomorrow and the next day should the Good Lord allow us to live through them. We’re not talking about resolutions here, we are talking about sincere goals we are going to fight for with every ounce of our strength and to the last breath. Realistic goals with just a hint of stretching what has been done before. We need to be like Star Trek in many ways, we need to go where we have not gone through the routes we have gone through and then beyond.

Wake up. Take two aspirin and soak it. Make your goals and then CHARGE!

I have set my goals for the next six months and they are:

  1. Finish audiobook on State of Defense (awaiting Audible’s approval for the past three weeks.
  2. Finish audiobook on State of Threat (at the narrator’s”
  3. Finish three more books (last chapter on one, finish the second which is at 25%, and one brand as yet thunk up)
  4. finish audiobook on Gentle Rebellion (have just received the equipment to narrate myownself)
  5. Review two of my old books for errors and repair files (I am reading them on my new Kindle and finding errors hear and there)
  6. Be faithful to my Lord and enjoy the 73rd year he has given me (He has been very good to me for 72 years as of tomorrow)

May you all be blessed in the coming days in ways beyond your wildest imaginings.

MERRY CHRISTMAS is the password.

MERRY CHRISTMAS is the word of the day. You hear it, sing it, and return in. Is a conscious thought involved? Merry,  happy, joyfilled, Christmas.  Christmas, mas – a celebration,  Christ – the babe in a stinky, fly-filled, crowded, noisy stable because no one cared. He cared enough to rise to show us how to live and then, like the warrior he is, died for you on the battlefield of heaven so you can be the person the Creator wants you to be, which is a person beyond your wildest imaging.  Accept the gift he made for you with his own hands.
